ROSD Warband Character Brief (Character Backstories)!! #rosdmovie [Ep. 84]
Writing some character backstory for your warband for any tabletop skirmish game kickstarts your narrative campaigns. 💥More below!⬇
And it's fun! (Really.) I wrote up character backstories for on-screen warband in the Rangers of Shadow Deep movie the same way I would have written them up for a tabletop warband and we discuss why this is important for the screenwriting process and why it's great for just tabletop play with your friends (and enemies). There's also some initial AI-generated character concept art to go with each character.
We also touch on what the hidden value is of noodling with presentational design on something that could literally be just a plain text document.

Although it's nice to have discussions about this and to hear all PoV's. I disagree with these points (this is my humble opinion) ... GW's makes some excellent products , that cant be denied and the lore is one of the richest IP's out there. But they truly are one of the most ANTI-consumer businesses out there. Using the same Apple analogy , imagine if you bought a new Iphone , only to have it not work due to an update a week after release?? (looking at you codexes , data cards or in some cases whole miniature ranges ) or selling the latest Iwatch , but only for limited qty's (FOMO tactics) for one day? The main problem isn't the pricing (which is really out of hand now) , but their shitty business practices which treat their customers with such disrespect.

There is no issue with people making profit. There is a problem with the unethical business practices at GW. It is unethical to make transactions without giving the consumer choice. Like to require a unit minimum size of 3 and then only sell 2 models in a box. When an expensive codex is released, and then invalidated in under 6 months. When entire model lines are "retired" and those models become invalidated for official play, only to reintroduce a new line later. And before anyone says anything "bUt YoU dOnT hAvE tO pLay" like Dr. House in the video brushed over with his "luxury item" crap, 'Oblivion' is not an ethical choice if you have an option. "Oblivion" is the "you don't have to do that" option (my way or the highway crap.). Because it is a non-option, thus eliminating choice in the matter. And yes, you don't have to play the game, but for the people already vested in the game, GW's tactics unethically eliminate the possibility of choices. And this is entirely on GW's shoulders. Let's take my examples: They can sell units of the appropriate minimum size. They can PLAYTEST their codexes before publishing. It costs them nothing to say that old models are valid in official events. Instead they choose to eliminate player choices, solely for their benefit, at the detriment to the players, and the game. This is unethical. Stop fellating GW for bad behavior. It's not OK, it was never OK, and thankfully with 3d printing and better online rulesets, it is rapidly becoming moot.

What's wrong with GW? It's capitalism. It's always capitalism, and yes it really is that simple. I agree with most of what you've said other than "vote with your dollar". That statement implies free market = good actually. Tell that to the Irish as they starved to death because of a bad potato crop. Or the Bengali famine that was ALSO engineered by the British? Or how about the East India company? Nothing says "free market" like burning tons of nutmeg to artificially produce scarcity. Every single company IS Enron. All of them. They're ALL Exon Mobile for precisely the reason you outlined in this video. Profit first, and especially for shareholders EVERYTHING else second. Anyway the notion that consumer choice somehow has an impact on these companies or the way they behave is simply laughable if you ask me. They all operate in the same system, and as such they must follow it's rules. They will chase ever greater profits no matter WHAT they have to do. Including rendering the entire god damned planet uninhabitable for sentient life. We need a new system cause this one can't be fixed by anything other than replacement.

Maybe something on one of her arms or across her stomach. Maybe some kind of tick. Looks like she already has PTSD. Just a few thoughts. The main character is going to be one hell of a bad ass as the movie progresses. Thanks again for a distraction for my Saturday morning. Believe me I needed it. By the way. I knew a woman who went to High School with my by the name of Roya. With all the characters put together. I can see some cohesion building with them as time goes on. I did love the backstories. It shows a lot of hard times between them. I can see that being the glue in mix for them. Maybe some flash backs for them in the movie to show some of the crap they went through.

Anything that feeds the brain ideas and inspiration and conveys what one is thinking is a good idea, like making these article style character bios/backstories - it doesn’t even matter if these are the «final» backstories or not, they push the process forward, developes the scope and clarifies :) As a «visual thinker» myself my brain always work best if I can doodle, draw boxes and arrows and little illustrations and visualize concepts that convey something tangible. And sometimes it’s even faster to do it this way, because it immediately sets the stage and draw people into the world. The only possible drawback is locking oneself into a direction too soon in the process, so it’s important to not just make it and leave it - make multiple versions of them, write new ones and see if they trigger some new details to keep :) The most important part though is that these things, even though the info might not *be* in the movie it can influence other things, how the characters react to things based on their backstory, small detail from their backstory that can bleed into thw movie to fill it out and make thw characters more dimentional, source material for improvisation - so much good can come from world building like this, so time well spent :)

    • @tabletopalchemy
      @tabletopalchemy 6 днів тому

I’ve always wished I could have come from a “drawing/visualization” space since I was a kid - but I “couldn’t” draw so I’ve always come at “painting” my ideas with words (which is perfect for, you know, trying to progress in a visual medium 😂). But everything you said I believe to be true! Gotta walk in the shoes I’ve got lol. 🍻

When your friend said "do you need to do that" creating back history. It struck a cord with me and poses a question in terms of do you have a plan you are following to get the movie made ? I do worry with project like this it is easy to get caught up in the creative process doing the things you enjoy rather than doing the things that move the project along in the timescales. So often I see projects fail because they become to wrapped up in a creative process never able to move beyond it. I would love to see you explore what the plan looks like and how you map out the timescales. How long do you think it will take to make the movie, when do you plan to start the first shooting, what do you need to do to get that far. How do you plan a project like this ?

Excellent questions and highly appropriate. I look at everything with the idea of how to get it produced in the run - of course each alchemist operates under their own method of madness lol. But yes everything you’ve mentioned I’ll be sharing at various points. Every aspect is a chain of decisions and choices that have to be deconstructed in certain ways to optimally attack, for example, right now I’d love to nail down what the prospective budget is I’d like to find; but this requires a number of things beforehand, the first of which is, if not a full script, at least a treatment, for which I needed the characters figured out. It also requires some ideas on where and how to shoot etc. I’ll probably have an entire episode just on looking at a blank film budget to show how much detail there is to figure out lol. It’s a journey! 🍻

I got cursed city & dominion for 50% off. This month I got 2 combat patrols, 1 boarding action, a drop pod, and a bucket of paints for 40 to 60% off, (sadly local FLGS was closing). Warhammer can be extremely cheap. You just gotta be patient. I only play kill team and have lost count on how many free teams I've been able to build by either cutting up a combat patrol or the xmas box sets and selling all the vehicles or terminators, & heros in fb groups. (FOMO did hit me on the ashes of faith box, but glad i picked it up at release) Same with the terrain, I got 3x chalnath boxes, sold 3 sister teams, 3 sets of books, 3 token sets, 2 tau teams, and barely paid anything for 3x terrain sets and 1 tau team. Was able to build a hive city board for extremely cheap.

Stealth - A figure declares they are being Sneaky French Buggers. They follow the movement rules for that, moving slowly towards whatever. No dice roll is made until the Monster phase. If it could be targeted. THEN, they roll and require 11+ to remain hidden. Failure means they are targeted.

Here are some thoughts, hopefully they contain a nugget or two of useful information. First, your instincts on the teaser are spot on. It must be a teaser for The Shadowdeep and not for your movie. No one has heard of Shadowdeep, and even fewer care about your movie. The teaser should take what inspired you to make a movie about Shadowdeep and equally inspire the viewer and their desire to hear your tales from this dark and dangerous land. Example: Sin City A Lady in Red. Two low budget films to check out are ScyFy's Dune, 4.5 hours of quality film for $20m and The Witch 1.5 hours of colonial New England horror for $4m. Get a very good idea of what can and cannot be done in post. My first notion for mist was to do it in post. Can you film under the forest canopy during the day and turn it to night in post? Your idea of smoke grenades conjured disturbing thoughts of film-making disaster. An outdoor smoke machine is $1500 and a 2kwh "solar generator" is around $1700, which would run the smoke machine continuously on max for 1.5hrs. You can make a 5kwh battery for about the same price as the commercial 2kwh, but you need know someone who is very good at making containers. The wiring is easy, but putting it in something that can be recklessly ported about and left out in the rain is not. Also, it looks like you can operate gas powered generators between 10am and 8pm on state lands.

Now I'm confused. I thought you _were_ Michael Wincott's brother? That was a cool voice over. This is all looking like a very 'right up my alley' sort of movie. Is the writer's strike an issue for you? If weather is a problem now, does that impact the shooting schedule? Are you already thinking franchise? Is this a possible gateway into movies for other TTRPG content? Man, so many questions. Don't waste your precious time on a reply. I'm sure it will all come out as content. I'm just a nerding out geek not aided by also being a bearded weirdo. Please ignore my ramblings. Can't help myself tho. Make it a foggy setting, with broken overcast that allows limited light in the middle areas of the deep but true dark on the edges where the sun cannot reach. Kinda like London at sunset. +1 for Barker and Books of Blood :) also, movie has «shadow deep» in the title so *some* darkness must be expected ;) using dark or darkness should be fine as it can mean shadow and not necessarily «night» - but finding that perfect phrase … not easy - «There’s something in the ….» could also be something about the deep, underground, lurking beneath/behind/in the shadows/darkness or beyond the deep (one of my all time favourite games was a text adventure on the C64, Lurking Horror, great game :)

I went back and rewatched Ep 79 to get a feel for Beldeth, and what drives her. She has so much personal hatred for the people who refused to listen to her warnings. So much hatred, she turned from the light and embraced the shadow. Here's my two cents on what our Ranger hears behind her: First we hear skittering sounds, chitinous sounds, ominous sounds of night, all coalescing into Beldeth's voice, thick with hatred for the humans who spurned her, ultimately flowing into a rushing of wind, that ends with Beldeth apparating off screen behind our Ranger, who then turns and reacts. Beldeth: (her voice starts soft with each first sentence [coming from different directions], then hardens sharply with each accusation "I warned the Shadow Deep would come. You wouldn't listen. I saw your towns and villages crushed. You only laughed. I foretold the dead would wake and foul the earth. You spurned me. And now you know. The Shadow Deep finds us all." (the first three lines of dialogue could echo around our party, directionless, and the last line, the line filled with venom, would come rushing in on the wind, ending with the Ranger's turn of head and reaction.)

… OK… OK… I love this! Oh boy! Here are my suggestions, I hope you don’t mind. If you do mind…here they are anyway. If you don’t want to film at night, then can something be waiting for them in the “shadows” in lieu of the “dark.” There are shadows everywhere, throughout the day and night. You would have to adjust your opening dialogue, but that’s not so hard and “shadows” sure fits in with the title. You can use stencils to draw the tattoos on the woman’s face. That way, they will always be the same and hopefully in the same place. Nothing drives me crazier than having tattoos be slightly off during different scenes in the film, unless they are magical tattoos, and the specific tattoo that is protecting the character moves up to do the work.. maybe to her forehead. Then I wouldn’t mind if they moved. Ooo that is a good idea. And she may have to wait, while fighting the monster, until her tattoo moves up to the correct position from say… I don’t know… Her shoulder to her forehead…oh, the suspense, and I can hear her dialogue! You can have this idea if you give me a really small itsy-bitsy credit at the end of the movie. That would be so cool. But, even if you don’t, I will continue to be a Patreon supporter, because I like you. Your morning voice sounds good. I wouldn’t mind if you used it. I understand when you say there has to be a “rhythm “to it. There’s rhythm in everything, even my woodcarvings. It makes me believe in the string theory… We’re all just vibrating … making different harmonies. I think from the rustling of the leaves, as the voice gets louder, you either need one word of three syllables, or a sentence of three syllables to keep the rhythm of the music. So go back to work. You’re doing so great! I can’t wait for your next video.

A whitish-green non directional light. As long as you shoot on overcast days (not Sunny 16 but Cloudy 8) you can color grade in post.
